Why we're doing it

Everyone knows why it’s bad to throw rubbish away on the beach. Everyone knows the impact it has – not just as an eyesore – but on marine life and the environment in general. So no preaching here.

We’re doing it because we walk our dog here nearly every day and for us it’s a great connection to the natural world that changes hour by hour, sunset by sunrise and each and every tide. The wind and the rain; the snow, sleet and hail and the bright sun; clouds scudding across the sky; the tang of salt and smell of sea-weed and the crunch of shingle.

Even the Fawley burners can look great sometimes. It’s always changing, throwing up new vistas and new sensations and it makes us forget the 9-5 and the rat-race.

Until the dog cut his paw on a broken bottle. And until some enemy of humanity tipped a truck load of tyres off the cliff and onto my lovely, unloved beach.

And then we really noticed how much litter there is.
And the council only clear it up once or twice a year and that’s just not enough. That’s why.
